Another installment in the long and fruitful combination between beautiful women and sparse clothing, a partnership that’s been winning hearts and minds for centuries, is our upcoming supplementary Spring 2012 Lookbook shot by Rae Threat and Kimberly Kane. We’ve employed the talented Ms. Threat before, most recently for the Fall 2011 shoot featuring Andy San Dimas and Jessie Andrews.

This time it’s got more girls, more locations, and – of course – more guns. Rae and compatriot Kimberly Kane rounded up the one and only Belladonna, blonde bombshell Charlotte Stokely, the gorgeous Gracie Glam, and last but not least, Aiden Ashley and got them into (and out of) some of the best Spring 2012 items.

Here is the end of season lookbook that I hand in putting together:

He’s a Harvard Math graduate and 2x DMC World Champion, a Scratch professor at Dubspot and a one of NYC’s diamond in the rough producers. This barely starts to describe the infinite talent possessed by my new partner in crime DJ Shiftee. After many hours at his palace, we have a couple of grime tracks ready to destroy dance floors world wide: the first one to be released this summer, will be “EKG Riddim”. the track has gotten alot of good feedback from a very different group of DJs spanning from The Bloody beetroots, Crookers, Drop The Lime, Tittsworth, Pictureplane to Joker, Roska, Curl Up, Flinch and Craze to grime heads like J-Sweet, Starkey, Spooky, Elijah and Royal-T.

Recently the track was played on Rinse FM by Elijah in a new producers feature; on Deja Vu FM, starting off Spooky’s show; and was also included in Royal-T’s latest Mishka Keep Watch mix (at 31″30).

Being no stranger to the genres, within the the past 6 years i have been promoting Dubstep and Grime weather it be through events, mixes, merchandising and just plain telling people what they should be listening to weather they like it or not… I can be convincing yet abrasive so don’t test me. Above is the most recent graphic produced, along side Art Dir. Mike Jones and head designer Adrien Travis, for Butterz‘s two year anniversary. To celebrate the release of this shirt, found in our online store, and the current second wave of Grime music, we also teamed up with Butterz wunder kid Royal-T to produce the 33rd installment of our Keep Watch mixes.

Amongst the first Dubstep artists that I’ve had the pleasure of working with we find one of the don’s of the genre and Dub Police label head, Caspa. The label wanted our personal touch on their theme and we went all Maniac Cop on them giving the hard hitting sound a taste from the grave. The shirt was produced to celebrate their February USA tour which featured Caspa himself, Trolley Snatcha, D1 and Subscape who fueled the fire with a Keep Watch mix of his own taking the drop to another level.

    Danny Brown

2012 marks the dawn of a new era for Hip Hop all around the country. Sure people still love ignorant rappers as much as the labels love making money based on supposed shock value and diversity but if you really want to tap in the new blood fresh from the I.V. then look no further. Rap is a really hard sell for me but when I come across talent i really go with it guns blazing making this lookbook even more inspiring to produce.

For Spring, as you have seen in the previously posted lookbook video, we focused on NYCs real freshmen class with a few notable exceptions such as Danny Brown. We were able to shoot in most of NYCs boroughs illustrating the different backdrops and living arrangements of most born and raised artists. The best art will always be born from struggle and this is not the exception as I lightheartedly nick named this shoot “The Project Award Tour”.

Enlisting the help of a bevy of up-and-coming or on top of their game New York rappers, we traveled all over this dirty pretty city with clothes over our arms, 808s in our ears, and freshness in our hearts, making sure all you fans out there could see the new stuff we’ve worked so hard on in the best settings possible. We’ve enjoyed shooting these videos around the country and even the world, but for Spring 2012, nothing felt better than getting back to NYC.

You’ll see the fun-loving Queens rap trio Children of The Night traipsing through the borough’s most iconic monument. There’s Ghe20 Goth1k mastermind Venus X, followed by Left Leberra and the AREB Crew. Next up to the plate is the Greedhead posse, featuring recent Мишка mixtaper Lakutis as well as the one, the only, Das Racist. Followed by Perrion, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire and the whole Peel Off Crew – Goldie Glo, Dallas Tha Kid, and Heron. Out on loan from Detroit, the expertly coiffed Danny Brown, and Bay Area transplant Gita. DJ Shiftee representin’ Manahttan and MPC remix machine Party Supplies back in Brooklyn; Action Bronson himself stopped by our office to play with official Мишка pooch Romy.

The video was captured, directed and edited by Matthew Caron and produced by yours truly.

As the story goes in the early 2000s I used to be a stylist and a party organizer/promoter and during those years is when i first crossed paths with Mishka NYC. Taking a liking for my keen and fashionable eye, the brand decided to take me on to style & produce all their catalog/lookbooks and initially even model for them along side my friends and collaborators. Looking back at the print booklets, there are certainly some funny haircuts and faces to be laughed at, none the less the direction progressed and matured into working with with agency models in 2009-10 producing solid lookbooks for Fall & Holiday 2009 and Fall & Spring 2010 by Marley Kate; and Holiday & Summer 2010 by Elizabeth Weinberg.

For 2011 we set out to build seasonal campaigns around our featured artists around the globe from NYC to LA over to London and back to Toronto. As we gear up to release our Spring 2012 Lookbook set in NYC with this year’s best of Hip Hop, let’s take a look (no pun intended) at the past year… (click titles for photos)

Being a streetwear company, you would automatically think we love hip hop and that rappers love our clothing: correct! Of course that has never been our only focus as we span the genre when it comes to artist support, collaborations and music releases from Goth, Hardcore and Metal to Electro, House and Dubstep we do it all as it all inspires us and gives us the energy to continue.

Mishka Records starts off as collectors 7″ for lovers of the darker side of music with releases from Hussle Club and //Tense// with available digital downloads (including remixes) via Bandcamp. Over the past year and a half we have focused on releasing, on an almost monthly schedule, Hip Hop releases in a classic (yet online) mixtape format. Sure enough the lines were blurred by press and artist including all our music releases under the same umbrella: Mishka Records. In 2010 we successfully released two mixtapes by Das Racist and 2011 was an even greater year as we released pivotal mixtapes by Stalley (soon after signed to Rick Ross’ BMF label); Main Attrakionz; and the critically acclaimed Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire (seen above in one of the video of the year).

These three mixtapes, along with releases from other supported artists, made many of the year end’s Best Hip Hop, Best Mixtape and Best Album lists from online publications such as Stereogum, Spin, Pitchfork to being nominated by Fader as one of the 5 labels to watch in 2012; furthermore the label and brand have been recently profiled by the Forbes blog as an exemplary and unique cross pollination between the fashion and music industries.

The story begins in way back in 2003 or 4, many years of sober partying are making the memories a bit cloudy, when i first came to know about Mishka. After a year of collaborating on shoots of various nature, my now defunct series of NY Bass parties, teamed up with the brand with whom i worked on starting an artist program. The program consisted of building an extended family with artists the we loved and supported. As the year went on, the family grew and little did I know many of these artists knew of the brand and were early adopters making mutual support even easier. From Japan to Poland and back to London we supported artists and sponsored monthly parties in most of the major international cities.

In 2007 I started the Keep Watch mix series, creating the artwork (featured above, my favorite cover) and curating the artists, starting it all with a stellar mix from Jokers Of The Scene in order to give new and more established artists a platform to expose their talent to a growing worldwide stage. This proved to be a successful series as we are the only clothing line with a consistent DJ mix series that has boasted 32 mixes to date, championing genres such as Dubstep since 2007-8 when the term was virtually unknown. Some of the artists to grace us with their talent and support have been Skream, Rusko, 12th Planet, Congorock, Crookers, Major Lazer, Buraka Som Sistema and oen of my personal favorites by DMC champion DJ Shiftee. Check out the Bloglin or Mishka Soundcloud for complete list of Keep Watch mixes and a series of related one off mixes.

6 Months ago I had the pleasure of working on this project with the Loose World agency members and the Jack Threads team in order to illustrate how small independent companies are constantly born and through hard work they can carve out a niche in the fashion industry. Mishka was selected as the first brand, out of four, to illustrate the  HBO show’s likeness to real life. The short piece revolves around the story of the brand and the creation of a graphic inspired by the HBO show “Hot To Make It In America” which was made available on sale for a limited time via Jack Threads. Spot the final shirt product in the video and myself looking extra bossy! (R.I.P. my S2A rings in the above still, guilty of being too cool for cops)

    Spooky

2011 proved to be the resurrection of one of the rawest UK based genres to surface in this millennium. Grime originates somewhere between the late 90s – early 2000s Dark Garage days. It’s tinged with Jungle and UK Hardcore vibes and is characterized by an alternating 8-bar structure and vocals from street warlords that battle for mic supremacy.

The mid 2000s brought Grime to the US, with Vice pushing the Run The Road mixtapes. It was a time when Wiley and Roll Deep reigned supreme with JME, Skepta and Boy Better Know. Unfortunately, the genre was never properly promoted here and even the UK music industry discredited it, calling any generic hip hop “Grime.”

Most of the original Grime producers are still circulating and some still have Rinse.fm show such as Elijah and Skilliam. Their label, Butterz, has almost single-handedly kicked the scene in its ass. Score 5, Spyro, and Teddy also run weekly shows playing the newest in the genre. Plus you can’t forget Spooky on Deja Vu FM, and one of the originators, Logan Sama, who’s constantly setting the bar high on Kiss FM.

    P-Money

Finally, Grime has some star MCs such as P-Money (who alongside Blacks released the best mixtape of the year, P and Blacks) and D Double E, both of whom have proved themselves on many tracks, even dipping into Dubstep and DnB influenced productions, which made making this list all the harder.

Producers and labels have come back in a big way, and if there is one person that has been turning everything to gold, it would have to be Spooky: applying a traditional structure and sound to his productions, he has brought us back to a better time, when music made your spine tingle and maybe even want to punch a guy in the face. The one label that has really made an impact, with their eclectic and forward thinking roster of producers, is Butterz: from the melodic and aggressive sounds of Royal T, to the more dubbed out crossover productions of Swindle.

The task at hand was arduous, and all ten tracks deserve as much recognition as the other. There are also a handfull of tracks that I had to include as honorable mentions, such as Bok Bok‘s “Silo Pass“, Neon Beats‘ “Attack”, DJ Shiftee‘s remix of Ayarcana’sAllright“, Deset’sVirus” and the majority of Preditah’s Eightsome EP. So enjoy the list, and lets make 2012 the year of Grime worldwide… Pray for Bass!
